Oct- 06 Coober Pedy, Breakways & Gawler Ranges

The Northern Territory rest areas are very good, we found them clean, water tanks at most, fire wood and BBQ. How ever one rest area a local camping tour operator was helping himself to the fire wood, loaded his van, with the help of his campers and off.

I am sure we are not the first or last to get this photo!

We are now offically in 'Crow Eater' country

The metropolis of Coober Pedy, well part of it.

Just one or three mullock heaps, don't go walking around here in the dark!

With the Bushtracker unhooked, we toured the 'Breakaway's', same features as the Painted Desert further North. Interesting features______

Longest fence in the world 5,300k's, 2,500 of it in South Australia - commonly known as the 'DOG FENCE" keeps the dingo's out of the sheep country

Water tanks with catchment roof, water was and still is precious, but water bore's, pumps and wind mills have helped.

Water tank and trough at Kangaroo Station on the Kingoonya to Mt Ive road

The old and the NEW!

Out in the middle of no-where , hang on I'll get the coordinates for you ______

Cattle Grid - just enough room to get through

We had a great road most of the time thru the Gawler Ranges - two graders working on the roads.

Another wagon _____

Check out the wooden brake system!

Lake Gairdner - Sir Donald Campbells land speed record site back in the 60's

Our camp site way down there!!

Salt crust

Okay! - it's the last wagon, they just look so majestic and sure have some stories to tell

This is the orginal Vermin Proof Fence, to keep the rabbits out. They built two parallel fences several miles apart. Removed all the rabbits, and dingo's, then built another fence further out until the present location of the DOG FENCE. Back in the 20 & 30's no cold beer after a hard day's work out here.

Sun rise at Lake Gairdner - magic!

Mt Ive Station from Mt Ive, a good 4 wheel drive track to the top.

Aborginal soak holes in the rocks near the station homestead.

Someone has to open the gates! Some get a bit tricky, with wire going all directions.

Rock formations on Mt Ive Station

It sure is flat!

Dunny with a view - pity the doors in the wrong place, but it does come complete with _____

a hand basin!

It's then off to the Organ pipes in Gawler Range National Park. Checked out several camp locations, but the scrub needing some serious pruning so kept rolling___

Pencils stuck into the hill side!

More pencils

Photo's really don't show the whole picture!

Can't get good sausages these day's - so we make our own. Guess what was for dinner - fresh and yummy!

This is Pilappa Rock - which rivals the Wave Rock in W.A.

Sunrise from the top of the rock

Weathered rock on top of Pilappa Rock. Rock pools on top of the rock, well thats when ever it rains!

Next stop - Yalata and Geues camp area at the Head of the Bight - see "Fishabout"
